When life…

November 20, 2012

A lot of people might have this feeling. When life just seems to make no sense at all and they’re just asking themselves, ”Why am I here? What’s the point of doing what I do?”. When they just feel like they don’t belong anywhere because people are so different. Everyone is self-feeding themselves and no one really cares, no one truly loves. It almost got to a point where if you’re friends with someone, it’s only because that person don’t want to be alone. The chances that you two could actually be mutual friends and caring for one another is simply taken for granted. You work hard and sometimes, don’t feel much rewarded. People go to school 1/4 of theirs lives, work for the next couple of years, retire and die. You then ask yourself, ”Is that really what it’s all about? This thing called life, is that it?” Some of you might actually be happy and well-satisfied with this scenario. Some of you might just want to live a healthy and happy life and die in peace. Although, know that before you die, you might come across this feeling. That feeling where you feel like all this makes no sense. Even if it lasts two little seconds, you might come across it. What’s the purpose of  working hard all your life and simply die. All the things that you worked hard for are left behind. Your house, your wife/husband, your job, your friends and so on. After you’re gone, you can’t even be there to contemplate all that you’ve worked hard for and say, ”I am proud”. So what’s the point right?

Well, know that this feeling will come only if your main purpose in this life is to work hard for all the material and lustful things of this world. If your one and ultimate goal is to have a big and nice house, luxury cars or even to just have a nice job or a nice family, a university degree, if that’s all there is you’re living and working hard down this life for…it’s normal for you to think that life makes no sense. It’s normal for you to feel like you’re not going anywhere because things of this world are simply vanity. If you constantly focus on the things of this world and  haven’t had that feeling yet, it might be in the way.

Such material cannot give you the real happiness that you might want. This free, liberating and peaceful happiness that you desire. You cannot be fully satisfied with these things because they’ll only leave you wanting more and more. They can’t give a sense to your life. I’m not saying that you shouldn’t have a house or not go to school, but simply that these things are only temporary. In order for you to feel like life makes sense, you’ll have to focus on much more valuable and intangible things.

Matthew 16:26 says, ”What good will it be for a man if he gains the whole world, yet forfeits his soul? Or what can a man give in exchange for his soul?” If you feed your soul with good elements more than you spend your time gaining treasures of this world, you won’t have this feeling of non-sense. Usually, these elements are things that you won’t be able to see. Love, peace, faith, goodness…things that last. Last more than two minutes, twenty-five years or even a lifetime. These elements last for eternity and only God can provide you with them. They cannot be bought or be found anywhere else but in God only, for He is the source of love itself. When you find these in God, you won’t even ask for more. You’ll have all you need.

Finding God won’t give this world anymore sense. We all know that this world is corrupted with all the wars, violence and hateful things going on everywhere but for God’s promise to stay alive (where He says that He’ll come back for us), these things must happen. As told to us by The Holy Bible, this world is only deteriorating. There must be war. There must be tears and suffering. Only, when you have Jesus, you have hope that all these things will soon come to an end, and that’s when it’ll all make sense for you to keep fighting. Just remember that we must live this life to prove to God that we want to go to Heaven. That’s the only way we can prove it. Also, know that if you get that feeling sometimes, or all the time, Jesus is only telling you that there are things more important while you’re on earth to focus on. If you get this feeling it means that Jesus cares about you. Otherwise, He’d leave you with this illusion that material things can make you happy and you would never try and look for something that can give value to your life.

“Why God though? God is not the only intangible on this earth, is He?” You’re right. There are other intangible things in this life. Although, God is the only one that won’t change. You can find happiness in family, friends, lovers… True. It’s also true that, despite them, they can disappoint you. That’s the difference, God’s love does not change. It does not vary.

So when life makes no sense, think about why it doesn’t. Examine your life, put away all the temporary attachments and put on good elements. Put on love, peace, faith, hope. When life makes no sense, put on God.

Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world – the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life – is not of the Father but is of the world. And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever.” (1 John 2:15)
